September Earthcare Engagement with Quaker Earthcare Witness

Dear Friends,

“Building vibrancy and resilience in this time of great need: strengthening the QEW network to respond.” This is the intention that is guiding our planning for October’s QEW Steering Committee meeting. It also represents so much of the work we’ve been doing this year.

Thank you for offering your time, expertise, creativity and prayers to our network. Your work connecting Quaker Earthcare Witness to your local communities is such a crucial part of bringing Earthcare into focus for the Religious Society of Friends.

I hope to see you and other Friends from your meetings and churches for our late summer/early fall workshops, events, and activities— and please share the invitations below far and wide.

And let me know how we can support you and your Earthcare work!

In peace and friendship,

Hayley Hathaway, Director
Quaker Earthcare Witness

Today we’re launching a crowdfunding campaign to raise $3,000 for our QEW Mini-Grants program! Please help us spread the word by sharing the blurb below:

Supporting Grassroots Projects: Quaker Earthcare Witness Mini-Grants

Each year Quaker Earthcare Witness offers matching $500 grants to diverse Friends meetings, groups, churches, and organizations to support their community’s vision of caring for the Earth and each other through its Mini-Grants Program. Past funded projects have included butterfly and pollinator gardens, an ecological literacy program for kids, a bike-lending program, and an environmental justice internship for a student of color. This month they’re trying to raise $3000 to help fund future projects with a focus on promoting environmental justice and engaging youth. Please consider making a donation here and visit QEW’s website for more on the campaign. Thank you!

September Worship Sharing
September 20 @ 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm EDT

Quaker Earthcare Witness hosts monthly online worship sharing groups in partnership with Friends General Conference.

In worship sharing, we gather in small groups to focus on a particular question (or questions) to explore our own experience and share with each other more deeply than we would in normal conversation.

We welcome all to join us!

Ecological Grief Follow-Up

with Gayle Matson & Hayley Hathaway

Wednesday, September 21 at 7-8:30pm Eastern

Ecological grief is all around us, whether we recognize it or not, we all carry it with us. Buddhist writer Joanna Macy writes, “Feeling pain for the world is as natural to us as the food and air we draw upon to fashion who we are. That pain is the price of consciousness in a threatened and suffering world. It is not only natural, it is an absolutely necessary component of our collective healing. The problem, therefore, lies not with our pain for the world, but in our repression of it.”

This 90 minute experiential workshop is an introduction to the phenomenon of ecological-grief—what it is, how to engage with it, and why it’s important. We’ll explore those tender places in our own hearts where ecological grief dwells and offer them sacred attention.

Engaging in the grief process in a spiritual community supports resiliency and helps us be more deeply attuned to the actions we are called to take.

We’re also going to be launching a 10-week eco-grief course modeled on the Good Grief Network starting on Thursday, October 6 at 7 pm-8:30 pm Eastern (and continuing until December 15 with a break on November 24). We’ll send out registration information and more details soon.

Save the Date: Meeting for Worship for Climate Action with Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT)

October 7

Quaker Earthcare Witness is supporting Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT)’s Vanguard S.O.S. campaign to pressure the Vanguard Investments Group to divest from fossil fuels. Vanguard is the world’s biggest investor in coal and one of the two biggest investors in gas and oil. On October 7th, Friends and allies in the Philadelphia area will be worshiping outside the home of Vanguard CEO Tim Buckley. EQAT shares:

Open to people of all beliefs but grounded in Quaker silent worship, we will sincerely pray for Tim Buckley to come under the weight of the climate crisis, and for divine guidance and courage for ourselves as we seek to pressure Vanguard to change course.

EQAT’s will host a training on October 1st for this event, so please sign up below if you want to attend—and read more below.

QEW will be hosting an online meeting for worship to accompany EQAT’s in-person worship. We’ll be sending out a longer update next week to our broader network—so stay tuned.
